What Is Preventative Dentistry?

dental patients talking in highgate hill QLDPreventative dentistry is a proactive approach rather than a reactive response. This approach allows us to think three moves ahead and develop a strategy, while a response often leaves us with few moves. We aim to maintain healthy teeth and gums for a lifetime through regular dental check-ups and exams in Highgate Hill.

Our dentists recommend seeing patients at least every six months for cleans and exams. This regular schedule allows us to reduce the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, infection, oral cancer, and more. Patients who are already treating gum disease may need to see us more frequently.

During your dental check-up, we will:

  • Conduct a comprehensive exam of your teeth, soft and hard tissues and gums
  • Keep an eye on any changes since your last dental visit
  • Screen for oral cancer
  • Administer digital x-rays to check beneath the surface
  • Recommend dental services like fluoride treatments or dental sealants to fight against tooth decay

We can reduce the risk of painful dental emergencies and oral health complications through diligent preventive dentistry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Digital x-rays are a common sight during routine dental exams and a standard diagnostic tool, allowing our dentists to look for early signs of tooth decay, infection and disease. We also monitor teeth placement for young children and determine if orthodontic treatment is necessary for adolescents and adults.

X-rays allow us to observe your oral health at a level that is not visible to the naked eye. While we typically deploy digital x-rays yearly, we may use them more frequently if needed.

Factors That Can Affect the Frequency of Digital X-Rays

  • Your age
  • An underlying dental issue that we need to observe
  • Current oral health
  • History of dental issues
  • History of gum disease or tooth decay

Are Digital X-Rays Safe?

There have been debates that centred around the safety of digital x-rays. As dental technology continuously improves, we have developed more sophisticated diagnostic tools and x-rays that minimise your radiation exposure.

Digital x-rays, in fact, cut down ration exposure by half. Since they don't require traditional film, they are also safer for the environment.

Digital x-rays allow us to see between teeth or under dental restorations to detect tooth decay and more. Once we have diagnosed a dental issue, we can take preventive action to protect your teeth, gums, tissues and jaw bone.

We also look for infection, oral cancer, cysts and diseases.

Digital x-rays are instrumental in maintaining your oral health, as well as placing dental implants and orthodontic treatment.

Dental X-Rays Keep Your Teeth and Gums Strong

Since digital x-rays are a valuable asset, we are happy to use them as needed to identify and treat oral health concerns.

Feel free to ask us about dental x-rays during your dental cleans and exam.

Digital Records

In the not-so-distant past, many dental clinics and medical practices would store patient records in paper files. Each patient file would contain notes, x-rays, insurance information, medical history and more.

Nowadays, digital records allow dental staff to keep patient information up-to-date and stored safely and securely in our in-house network. Since records are digital, we can instantly share them with specialists or insurance providers when needed.

We update your digital record after each visit so we can monitor your teeth and gums to catch any changes or conditions like periodontal disease.

We invite new patients to fill out our online form before their first appointment, so we can create their patient file by the time they come in for their appointment.

Intraoral Camera

At Be Well Dental, it is not part of our dentistry to push patients into agreeing to a dental procedure. Instead, we prefer to educate our patients and let them take an active role in their own oral health.

Intraoral cameras help us show patients exactly what we see. They are tiny digital cameras that allow Drs Bao, Will and Trang to take pictures of your teeth, gums and soft tissue. Patients can often see dental issues like eroded enamel, chips, cracks, fractures, cavities and plaque. We can display the images on a chairside monitor near the patient's chair, allowing them to see what we see and why we would recommend a certain dental procedure.

We Work Well with Anxious Patients in Highgate Hill, QLD

Feeling a little apprehensive? That's totally fine. Our warm and inviting dental team can help if you feel a little anxious or nervous about your dental appointment.

It's ok to feel uneasy. Even dental professionals can get a little tense—this is a normal human feeling. At Be Well Dental, we are strong believers in intentional and mindful thinking and action. The more we practice it, the more it flows through every action and thought, however minuscule. From daily activities like eating and driving to speaking with patients and staff, we strive to keep ourselves engaged in the moment.

We encourage our patients to be aware of their emotions, even if it makes them uncomfortable. Feelings of discomfort, stress and anxiety should be acknowledged and addressed instead of avoided, heightening feelings of fear. By giving a name to whatever we are feeling, we allow ourselves to explore instead of hiding.

Are You Missing One or More Teeth?

family in dental office waiting room in highgate hillOne of the greatest ironies in life is not knowing the value of something until it's gone. It takes bitter to value sweet, sadness to value happiness, and a missing tooth to value its role in essential activities like eating, chewing, speaking or smiling.

Aside from the immediate drawbacks, a gap in your smile can lead to further tooth loss without a placeholder preventing neighbouring teeth from shifting.

We offer durable, natural-looking tooth replacement restorations, including:
