The active ingredients in most teeth whitening systems are hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Both are safe and effective at whitening teeth.
Before embarking on any teeth whitening journey, the most important thing is to get the ‘A-ok’ from your dentist. Ask your dentist to check your teeth and gum health before proceeding to ensure that your gums and teeth will not be at risk of damage due to any whitening procedures.
There are four safe ways to whiten teeth.
1. Whitening Toothpaste
For some people, this is all you will need to keep your teeth looking white. Whitening toothpaste contains hydrogen peroxide and is usually a little more abrasive than regular toothpaste, making them effective at keeping stains off teeth. Some people find whitening toothpaste may cause their teeth to feel sensitive. If this happens, discontinue use. The sensitivity will usually go away. Consult your dentist if you are concerned.
2. Whitening Strips
These do work! However, most patients find that they cannot get the strips to adhere to their teeth perfectly as everyone’s teeth are different in shapes and sizes. Another complaint is that they tend to fall off as saliva builds up in the mouth. The strips are easy to purchase over the counter and are safe to use. If sensitivity occurs, discontinue use. If sensitivity persists, consult your dentist.
3. Customised, Take-Home Whitening Kit
This is the safest and most effective way to whiten teeth. Your dentist takes a mould or a scan of your teeth and creates custom trays that are unique to you. The trays fit your teeth perfectly, so they hold the gel perfectly against your teeth. There are different concentrations that your dentist can prescribe, and that will depend on your individual needs.
4. In-Office Teeth Whitening
Your teeth will be white within hours. Our patients enjoy a movie while the team whiten their teeth. At Be Well Dental, we will also make custom made trays for you to take home. This way, you can easily do touch-ups for any special occasions.
