What should I do if an adult tooth gets knocked out?

If an adult tooth (permanent tooth) is knocked out, time is critical. Quick action can save the tooth.

  • Find the tooth, and hold it by the crown (the top part), not the root.
  • If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with milk or saline. Avoid scrubbing or touching the root.
  • Try to reinsert the tooth into the socket immediately, if possible, and hold it in place by having your child bite down gently on a cloth.
  • If you can’t reinsert it, place the tooth in a cup of milk, or your child’s saliva. Avoid water.
  • Seek emergency dental care right away - ideally within 30 minutes. The faster we act, the better the chance of saving the tooth.

At Be Well Dental, we’re experienced in managing dental trauma gently and thoroughly. Whether it’s a baby or adult tooth, we’ll guide you every step of the way to support your child’s healing and oral health.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
